The 4th of July is a time for fun, fireworks, and food — especially in sunny Central Florida! But while we enjoy our backyard BBQs and family gatherings, it's important to remember that some holiday treats can be dangerous for our pets.

As your local pet care experts, we at Lux Pet Sitting are here to help keep your furry family members safe during your celebrations. Here’s a quick guide on what NOT to feed your pets this 4th of July — and a few safer alternatives.

1. No Bones About It — Skip the Cooked Bones

While it may seem natural to toss your pup a rib or chicken bone, cooked bones can splinter and cause choking, intestinal blockages, or internal injury. Rawhide isn’t a great substitute either — stick to pet-safe chews.

2. Beware of Burgers & Hot Dogs

Fatty, greasy meats like burgers and hot dogs may upset your pet’s stomach or cause pancreatitis — a serious and painful condition. They’re also high in salt and spices, which can be toxic to cats and dogs.

3. Say No to Onions, Garlic & Seasoned Foods

Onions, garlic, and chives (even in powdered form) are toxic to both dogs and cats, and they’re often hidden in burger toppings, marinades, and sauces. Just a small amount can cause serious health issues.

4. Keep Desserts Out of Reach

Chocolate, xylitol (a sugar substitute found in gum and baked goods), and even raisins can be extremely toxic to pets. That patriotic brownie tray may look harmless, but it’s best kept far from curious noses.

5. No Alcohol or Beer

Even small amounts of alcohol can be dangerous for pets, leading to vomiting, coordination issues, and in severe cases, respiratory failure. Be sure drinks are kept up high and out of reach.

✅ Pet-Safe 4th of July Treat Alternatives

Want your pet to join the fun? Try these festive, pet-safe options instead:

  • Frozen dog-safe fruits like watermelon (seedless), blueberries, or bananas

  • Pet-safe ice cream or frozen yogurt treats

  • Carrot sticks, green beans, or plain boiled chicken (no seasoning)

Hosting a Party? Keep an Eye on Sneaky Snackers

Even well-behaved pets may get tempted by unattended plates or distracted guests. Set up a quiet, pet-safe space inside your home with toys, fresh water, and their bed to help them feel secure — especially during fireworks!
