Keeping Your Pets Comfortable During Florida's Summer Months

Florida summers are no joke! ☀️ Between the rising temperatures and humidity, it’s important to keep a close eye on how our furry family members are handling the heat. At Lux Pet Sitting, we’re all about keeping pets happy, healthy, and cool – even on the hottest days. Here are a few of our favorite tips to help your pets stay comfortable during the summer months:

Keep Them Hydrated

Water is everything during Florida’s scorching afternoons. Make sure your pet always has access to clean, fresh water—both inside and outside. If you’re heading out for a walk, bring a collapsible bowl and a bottle of water just for them.

Walk During Cooler Hours

During midday, sidewalks and pavement can get hot enough to burn paws. Try to stick to early morning or evening walks when the sun isn’t as intense. At Lux, we schedule our dog walks with this in mind—safety and comfort come first!

Pro Tip: Use the “5-Second Rule”—if you can't hold your hand on the pavement for 5 seconds, it's too hot for paws!

Keep Things Cool at Home

Whether you’re out for the day or away on vacation, keeping the indoor temperature comfortable is key. Fans, A/C, and shaded areas all help. We also make sure pets in our care have cozy spots away from sunny windows.

Add a Little Fun Water Play

Many dogs love a good splash! A small kiddie pool, sprinklers, or frozen treats (like peanut butter popsicles) can provide cooling relief and enrichment. It’s a great way to beat the heat and have some fun!

Don’t Leave Pets in Cars – Even for a Minute

We know it seems obvious, but it’s always worth repeating: Florida heat can turn a parked car into an oven within minutes. Even with the windows cracked, the temperature can rise dangerously fast.

Pay Attention to Signs of Overheating

Look for:

  • Excessive panting

  • Lethargy or stumbling

  • Drooling more than usual

  • Vomiting

If you notice any of these signs, move your pet to a cooler area, offer water, and contact your vet immediately.
