As hurricane season approaches in Florida, it’s essential to make sure every member of your family is prepared — including your pets. While we hope the storms pass us by, it’s always better to be safe than sorry. Having a dedicated hurricane emergency kit for your pets can make a huge difference in ensuring their safety and comfort during an emergency.

Here’s what to include in your pet’s emergency kit:

Essentials for Survival

  • Food & Water (3–7 Days’ Supply): Pack resealable bags or airtight containers of dry food, along with bottled water. Don’t forget a collapsible food and water bowl!

  • Medications: Include at least a week’s supply of any medications your pet takes regularly, plus a list of their prescriptions and dosage instructions.

  • Leash, Collar, and Harness: In case of evacuation or power outages, you’ll need a secure way to control and move your pet safely.

Identification & Documents

  • Tags and Microchip Info: Make sure your pet is wearing a collar with up-to-date ID tags, and that their microchip information is current.

  • Medical Records & Recent Photos: Keep a waterproof bag with copies of vaccination records, medical history, and a recent photo of your pet (in case you’re separated).

Comfort Items

  • Favorite Blanket or Toy: Something familiar can help reduce anxiety during a stressful time.

  • Pet Bed or Crate: Especially if you have to go to a shelter or stay in unfamiliar surroundings.

Clean-Up Supplies

  • Poop Bags or Litter & Pan: Don’t forget to pack a portable litter box and scoop for cats.

  • Cleaning Wipes & Paper Towels: Handy for accidents or muddy paws.

  • Trash Bags & Disinfectant: Keep things clean and odor-free on the go.

Backup Plan

  • List of Emergency Contacts: Include your vet, nearby pet-friendly shelters, and your trusted pet sitter.

  • Name of Your Pet Sitting Company: If you’re away and a storm hits, a professional sitter can follow your instructions to keep your pet safe.
