Fireworks can take your celebrations to the next level. With their bright, dazzling colors,
and their loud, booming sounds, fireworks bring more excitement to the party. However,
the same can’t be said about our furry companions. The emotions and excitement we
feel while enjoying fireworks, are actually the opposite of how many animals feel
experiencing the same thing. As pet owners, it is crucial to understand the risks
fireworks pose to our pets as well as the precautions you can take to counteract the
dangers. This blog will cover why fireworks aren’t as exciting to animals, as well as, how
we can keep them safe.
Understanding the Dangers:
1. Anxiety: Some pets experience anxiety due to the loud noises fireworks let off.
While some pets may hide and seek shelter, others may run away or injure
themselves in the process.
2. Injury: Some pets may be curious when regarding the fireworks. This could lead to
the ingestion of toxic chemicals, burns, or eye injuries. Other pets may be
frightened by the fireworks leading to them running into traffic, jumping fences,
or getting into dangerous situations.
3. Health Issues: Due to the stress a pet may face, their health may decline due to
excessive heart rate, digestive issues, and tremors.
4. Escaping: Some pets may try to escape due to the stress they face. This could lead
to injury or getting lost in the process.
Taking Precautions:
1. Keeping Your Pet Indoors: Make sure to keep your pets indoors and let them view
in a secure environment. Create a secure, and safe environment that will help to
reduce stress. Make sure to draw your curtains, close your windows, and play
calming music to help drown out the outside noises.
2. Supervision: If you must take your pet outside, (i.e. a bathroom break) watch
them closely and use a leash or harness to make sure they will stay close by.
